Our Love Story

Her version:

I first met him on a quiet summer afternoon, 8 July 2022. I sat at the empty atrium of Regent College, nose in screen, humming to worship songs that I was preparing to lead that Sunday at church. "Hi! Are you [so-and-so]?" I looked up at this tall figure with a warm smile and thought, "Too bad I am not who this new guy is looking for, but his enthusiasm sure is refreshing." I told him my name and expected him to move on with his quest for this other person, but he stayed to introduce himself instead. He asked me for a church recommendation, so I invited him to mine.

He came to church alone that Sunday. I was singing on stage. He gazed over and I thought, "Shoot, distracting Cute Guy is looking my way..."

His version:

I saw her in the atrium many days before I spoke to her, but of course I was stuck in a conversation. While nodding "uh-huh" and maintaining eye contact, my mind was secretly racing for an escape to talk to her.

And when I finally got the chance, I messed it up. It was Friday afternoon in July and the atrium was empty, but I heard someone singing. Walking over to check it out, it was Jerusha. Still unfamiliar with her name (2 Kings 15:33 and 2 Chron 27:1),

I drew a blank, called her something else, and then smiled my way to a recovery.

Thankfully, she invited me to her church where she was leading worship that Sunday. I thought about all my other options (none) and decided to go.

After church, we had lunch with her friends during which Jerusha told us about her trip to Israel & Palestine. I had so many questions, so I asked all of them; three hours later, we were the only ones left. "This is better than wikipedia," I thought. "Smart, intense. Talks like Hello Kitty but sings like a black man."

Dear Lord, I *swear* I came to Regent College to better understand theology, REALLY. This is all so unexpected...
