John 3:8 “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
I always had trouble understanding this analogy. Where I come from, the wind blows in one sure direction long and hard until it brings thunder and rain so that the sound of the wind itself is obscured in the cacophony.
This morning, I woke before dawn to the sound of tidal waves…accept we were up on a hilltop and nowhere near any waves. I pulled my curtains open to investigate, and was immediately caught with a sense of wonder: it was the wind, whispering almost audible words as gets passed from tree to tree and back again like a volleyball between sweeping arms with not goal for the scoring.
It blows where it wishes…
I unlock the gate and stepped out to hear better.
Sentences, almost discernible. Serious in tone, but rhythmic, not rigid. A single, commanding voice in the clear night sky with nothing to interfere with it’s speech. I cannot tell where it came from, nor where it is going. The centre of its attention seem to be staying right in our courtyard, as if it intended audience is meant to stand right where I was standing, and the wind was a private conversation with me. Yet every time it changes direction, it was as if all of Bethlehem and Jerusalem shifts with it like the ocean backs the waves. Such power in a whisper.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit…
When sunlight arrive, all could see that the wind had painted the normally blank, blue sky with a generous helping of clouds this morning. Beautiful, white, fluffy ones.
